Influence of macroscale and regional circulation patterns on low- and high-frequency sea level variability in the Baltic Sea

Abstract The atmospheric impact on sea level variability in the Baltic Sea different time scales was investigated. Northern Hemisphere teleconnection patterns, namely, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic (AO) and Scandinavia (SCAND) were employed, a strong but non-stationary relationship found. SCAND appeared to be most relevant mean monthly variations throughout year. A negative correlation indicates that cyclonic centre over phase of enhances western circulation, which then triggers water inflow through Danish straits. AO annular mode reveals positive slightly stronger with than NAO. rapid increases recognized this study, those exceeding 24 cm within 5-day period, mainly occur cold season. These are associated development specific synoptic conditions Euro-Atlantic region, characterized by shift from high low pressure Europe increase gradient during week preceding rise. Rapid cyclones coming Atlantic, move 1500–2000 km rise waters. cyclone tracks may shifted north or south, while final position is Norwegian Sea.
